A classic of the social dance floor, the media vuelta
("half turn") lets the couple curve, coil and roll through
an elegant 180° in response to their feelings, the
flow of the music, or changing conditions on the dance floor.
Like many of tango's turning ideas, media vueltas
gain their power and grace by tapping into essential geometry
and body mechanics, and they help highlight one of tango's most
signature aesthetics: The ability of two partners to blend their
highly contrasting individual movements into a larger seamless
whole.
But the special appeal of media vueltas lies in
the idea that they are "incomplete" only "half
full" so they inevitably invite and inspire a wide
range of creative connections. Media vueltas not
only link readily to turning walks, turning resolutions and other
ideas that rotate 180°, they can readily flip sides, flip
roles, rewind, rebound, daisy chain, and integrate any number
of other layers and possibilities including sacadas,
cambios, enrosques, planeos and more.
In this 60-minute workshop, we will begin with an exploration
of the basic principles underlying all media vueltas,
move on to a closer look at how to get into and out of some classic
examples, then use our discoveries to point the way toward ever
greater freedom and expression on the dance floor.
